iphones and convergence

Over the years, I have been really impressed with all the Smartphone and convergence technology that is out there. It can be somewhat irritating that every two years something new and improved comes out, but nevertheless, I am impressed.
Specifically, I really like the iphone. Unlike the standard cellular phone, which when first introduced, according to the lecture on cellular technology, only offered calling technology, which is referred to as 1G.  The iphone offers almost everything you need in order to communicate.
When I first had a cell phone, in 2001, I could make phone calls and send and receive text messages (2G). I never envisioned where technology would take the standard cell phone. Smartphone technology is exactly that, smart. The iphone is about six inches vertical, by four inches across. There are four different versions of the iphone; the iphone 4 being the latest.  This version is either all black or white with a touch screen.
An iphone, as most Smartphone’s, offer all sorts of ways to communicate and entertain yourself. You can listen to your favorite music, download your favorite videos and music, store pictures, Skype, use GPS, use it as your remote control, security system, and surf the internet. Some of these features are downloadable as applications, or, apps. It acts as a camera and video camera, compass, calculator, speaker, and on and on. It almost has everything you want and need. This phone had a huge impact and effect on people. As a society, it revolutionized everything in technology. In 2007, just prior to the iphones release, there was anticipation for the device that most compared to as the “second coming, the technology savior, the Jesus phone” (Campbell, La Pastina, 2010.) Its impact is worldwide. Now, with the capability of carrying facebook wherever you go in your pocket, you can post and update things as small as what you are doing, to what has just happened (e.g. “Bin Laden Killed!”). I believe this is becoming the most popular feature and the thing that impacts us users the most: the ability to stay connected to the world and see/read what other people, our friends are doing, while having the option to call or text them in a matter of seconds using the same device. I believe people will start to see the advantages of convergence technology to a standard cell phone and they will begin to cross-over. With their sleek design, entertaining apps, and easy to use features, skeptics and cell phone loyalists will start to understand and accept the advantages that a Smartphone offers. Especially, as mentioned in the lecture, the use of the fractal antenna (a “bent” antenna inside the phone.) Which eliminates having to pull out an antenna.
Its hard to say what a Smartphone will offer in the near future. I think it will offer more apps to do more things. I think perhaps a Smartphone will have the capability to act as your car keys, your credit card, and maybe even as a cigarette lighter.( most of this is already available). But I believe that some sort of 3D type, interactive screen is on the horizon.

  1. I personally don’t have a IPhone but am impressed with the features that come with the phone. It definitely has changed the way we use our phones making an all in one device. I believe this is why we spend the money to purchase these technological devices because it makes our lives easier. Whether you are trying buy tickets to a movie you have been wanting to watch or using the GPS to find a place you have never been before. It is a life saver sometimes and don’t know what I would do without my cell phone. It is as important as any other necessity and believe the technology is only going to get better.

  2. I agree with this journal entry in the fact that the iphone has had a huge impact and effect on people worldwide. The iphone, with all of its apps and technologies has changed the meaning and use of cellular phones completely. Now a cell phone is not just a cell phone but as you stated a GPS, camcorder, camera, online shopping expert, credit card, and etc. I believe the cell phone technology will only get more high tech and that in a way excites me and frightens me at the same time.

  3. While I don't have an iphone, the iphone revolutionized the smartphone era. When the phone was first launched, Apple was the first to have a phone that had fast access to the internet, applications that can be downloaded in an intuitive system. The adoption of the technology has finally hit the late adopters after several years of being out in the market. Having a smartphone allows everyone to stay connected to each other easily. As smartphones have become easier to work even older generations are adopting the technology to stay connected with their families using Skype, texting, Facebook etc.

  4. Smart phones have revolutionized the world we live in. I myself am also impressed with the many capabilities of today’s phones. The ability to have news access, emails, music, GPS, and not to mention the numerous amounts of different applications has given the consumer the motivating factor to go out and purchase these expensive “mini-computers”.

These innovations have definitely made major improvements in the technological field. However, at what point does society say enough is enough? It seems to me that our cell phones are consuming are daily lives.

On a side note, it seems like everyone has an iPhone. So much so, that it almost makes the phone boring because everyone has it. I heard a recent rumor that the iPhone might be available for sprint customers. I’m not too sure I like this idea, the iPhone is monopolizing the market.

  5. Cell Phones have already become the ultimate convergence device. Five years ago when the IPhone first was released the big question was? Will people really need that much functionality out of a handheld device, and now its hard to imagine a life without an iphone.

  6. It is amazing how much I use my iphone. Between the interent, facebook, texting and calling, I always have my phone with me and use it constantly. Thanks to my iphone, I am now addicted to facebook because it is so easy to use. It is crazy to think when I got my first cell phone and it didnt even have a color screen! I also, like many others, found out about osama bin ladins death through facebook and text. It is amazing that those methods seem to be the quickest route for information passing.

  7. As a huge Iphone enthusiast, I could not agree more regarding what it has done for technology. Despite the wide array of smartphones currently available, (Evo, Blackberries, etc..) smartphone technology would not be where it is today had the Iphone not set this major precedent. Cell Phone companies began to see what cellular devices could potentially do, and the market errupted. I must say, I myself do not know how I would function on a day-to-day basis without my Iphone. I use it for everything from checking facebook, to banking, and even to check my work schedules. The Iphone truly has an app for everything. We as a generation need to be grateful to be so technologically blessed with such a mind blowing device.

  8. I completely agree! Personally, I have an Android phone but Smartphones in general are very impressive to me! You can almost carry your entire life in your pocket or purse! My smartphone works as my camera, Internet, GPS, Facebook, and hundreds if not thousands of applications are available such as my bank, Groupon, and many games! It is a little scary know that you are carrying your life in your pocket but the convenience is nice!

  9. I am the proud owner of an iPhone 4 and I can’t imagine my life without it. I completely agree with everything mentioned in this blog. The iPhone is an incredible piece of technology. I not only use my iPhone for things such as status updates on Facebook or tweeting on twitter, but I can now do other things such as looking up my bank account balance, transferring funds, and also deposit checks immediately. It is awesome!

  10. Iphone and smart phones are like second nature to us now. It is more of an essential need and I don’t think I could go a day without my own phone. Not only has the Iphone created an impact on our society but smart phones in general. Because these phones can do just about everything there is no need for certain devices. This technology is going to continue to advance through the years and have a bigger effect than it already has.

  11. I recently made a switch from a 2G phone to the 3G iPhone and I have to say "WOW!" I had no idea what I was missing out on. One device can make phone calls, browse the internet, take picture and video, and give me the weather forecast. The options are becoming limitless as bandwidth speed steadily increases. We have seen a spike in revolutions due to the fact that social communication is rampant. SNS's like Facebook and Twitter have made it possible for the people of many different countries to organize and act. Even the remote regions of the world have become knowledgable of the modern era and the individualism and freedom that comes with it. Just remember, knowledge is power!

  12. I think the introduction of the Iphone changed the cellular market completely and made companies have to take it to the next level in order to keep up. I t was the first phone to make it simple to download apps and check you bank statement while your on the go. NOt only that but the phone itself gets major updates every year that gives it new features and functions which makes it like almost getting a new phone every year. Also you can download apps or games right to your phone and you do not have to go to a store buy it and down load it to your phone.

  13. Last year Ibought my ipad first generation, I was one of the early adopters of this technology. I acquired this gadget about 4 months after it came out to find out later in that same year that Ipad 2 was coming out. I should have listened to my friends who all said that I should just wait a little bit longer, that way I would have an Ipad with a camera and its new features, but I was so amazed by this technology that I could not wait. The Ipad is the exact same thing as an Iphone but oversized, I love my Ipad, I take notes on it and download new apps every once in a while. I get really upset on how apple comes out with a new technology every year but it is all about business.

  14. Smart phones are moving life so much faster it is scary. Just because I have a smart phone, people think I have to a)always answer their text/calls (and if you don't its rude or there's something fishy going on) and b)multitask like a mofo. It sucks really. Yes it is impressive that this small device can do so much, but once it is in your possession beware of the responsibility that comes with it. Not to mention the lack of interpersonal skills that come with it. I wrote my blog on this and in fact, the more things your phone has the more caught up you will be. It is slowly belittling face to face conversations, undermining expression and feelings and ruining the experience of just being. We do not have to be doing something every single second of our lives. Also, because of all this multitasking going on, it has been proven that we are steering away from deeper thinking. Sad.

  15. I loved that quote “the Jesus phone.” I think we can pretend as a society that we aren’t completely consumed buy our fancy technology, but we are. At least I know I am. When I had to leave AT&T to save money, and inherently my beloved iPhone as well, I tried so had to pretend like I was perfectly fine with my new Sprint Evo and that despite what everyone said, I could make the transition to the inferior technology with its subpar graphics, clumsy software, and flimsy snap-on battery cover. But I was so wrong. My iPhone absolutely spoiled me and I can’t wait to be able to afford a phone plan with AT&T and get the iPhone 4 
